The results of the local body elections in Kerala have firmly placed the CPM-led LDF in the leading role with wins in 514 Gram Panchayats out of 941, Ten of the 14 District Panchayats, 112 of the 152 Block Panchayats and Four of the Six Municipal Corporations. Only in the case of municipalities, UDF has an edge. The opposition alliance leading in 45 Municipalities out of 86.
Counting of the votes is still going on at 244 centers through out the State. A total of 21,893 wards in 1,200 Local self-governing bodies went to polls in three phases on December 8, 10 and 14. The overall voter turnout was 76%.
These elections are being seen as a precursor to next Year’s Assembly polls. CPM-led LDF, Congress-led UDF and BJP-led NDA tested their strength at grassroot level.
The LDF has a clear lead over the main opponent UDF in both Gram Panchayats and Block Panchayats. LDF sweeps across these segments in 10 out of 14 Districts. The UDF has leads in only four Districts- Ernakulam, Idukki, Malappuram and Wayanad- in case of Gram Panchayats and only in Three Districts – Ernakulam, Malappuram and Wayanad in case of Block Panchayats.
