Facebook, Instragram pages of ‘Kisan Ekta Morcha’ blocked

This is another example of the criticism that face book is being used to supress the people’s voices and inciting religious hatred. The social media company on Sunday blocked the Page of Kisan Ekta Morcha, that was published on behalf of the farmers fighting for the repeal of Central Agriculture laws.

The social media giant also blocked the Morcha’s account on Instagram, a subsidiary company of it’s own. While Facebook claimed that the Morcha page was against its community standards, Morcha criticized the Indian government for abusing its power to supress protest voices.

Both the pages were blocked on Sunday following a live broadcast of Swaraj India chief Yogendra Yadav, one of the leaders of the protest. Mr Yadav there announced that the farmers will take part in an indefinite, relay hunger strike from Monday.

Yadav also called on people to bang plates during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s next Monthly Radio broadcast Mann ki Baat, due next Sunday, to ask the Prime Minister “When will you listen to our (the Farmers’) baat”.

Facebook page of Kisan Ekta Morcha is one of the largest pages being used for the Farmers’ movement. This action is stoking a debate of online censorship in India.

Kisan Ekta Morcha slammed the government of India for this censorship.

“Action against Facebook page is misuse of Govt. of India powers to supress the dissent voices. Dirty tactics when they can’t beat ideologically”
